About The Artist

I am Denise Brown. I have been painting for more than 20 years - mostly self taught. Painting has been a very satisfying private pursuit aimed at expressing my personal opinions, issues and beliefs. I agree with Picasso's statement that, "Painting is just another way of keeping a diary." I have sold a few pieces mostly for charity and to close friends and family. It has only been in recent years that I've thought about broadening my reach. I am a late bloomer and I think a large part of my delay in pursuing that goal was fear, but now that I'm older I am less fearful of what others will think.

I am driven by order and logic. My painting style is direct, color intensive and impasto - very expressionistic. I do preliminary sketches, but prefer to just dive in. I usually have a preconceived idea of what the painting will look like but am sometimes shocked by the finished product. Painting is the only part of my life where I feel comfortable enough to let things happen organically without judgment. The journey, not the destination, is the most rewarding part of painting process for me.

My favorite artists are Vincent Van Gogh and Wassily Kandinsky. Each of Van Gogh's brushstrokes conveyed the intensity of his emotions. I admire Kandinsky 's art because although they were abstract there was an underlying organic flow and structure. He was a musician and you can feel the rhythm in his work.
